Motorcyclist's arm severed, passenger injured in collision

A motorcyclist’s arm was severed and his pillion passenger injured in a collision with a crop sprayer being pulled by a tractor.

The 38-year-old victim, from St Helens, Merseyside was taken to hospital where his arm was surgically reattached.

His pillion passenger suffered thigh injuries to the thigh, but these are believed to be less serious.

The tractor was spraying crops in a field at Hilton’s Farm. The sprayer and the motorbike collided later, on Broad Lane, between Downholland and Great Altcar.

Lancashire Constabulary and the Health and Safety Executive have launched a joint investigation into the incident at 9.40am on Sunday July 13.

A spokewoman for the police said: “The tractor was in a field adjacent to Broad Lane and, when it reached the end of the field, it made contact with the passing motorcycle.

“The rider’s left arm was severely injured and the passenger received an injury to the leg.

“The rider is recovering in hospital. His arm was reattached but will have limited use.”
