Motorcyclist wins damages after police van crash

£10k for biker in police van crash

1 AUGUST 2008

A MOTORCYCLIST left badly injured after a police van pulled out in front of him on the wrong side of the road is to be awarded £10,000 in a motorcycle accident claim.

Colin Jones, 45, suffered several broken bones, including a shattered thigh bone, a broken collar bone and fractured ribs after crashing into the van after it emerged from a row of parked cars at the side of Edenfield Road, Rochdale.

After the accident, Mr Jones, from Stockport, spent a month in hospital, and was unable to work for three years, and lost his career as a result of his injuries. Four years on, he still has problems in his knee and leg which was trapped between his Kawasaki motorbike and the police van in the smash.

Now following a court case to determine who was to blame, a judge has ruled in Mr Jones’ favour, directing Greater Manchester Police to make an immediate interim payment of £10,000 in damages and costs. A second hearing to determine exactly how much he should be paid in total will be held in a month’s time.
