Protective Clothing & Gear
When it comes to rider safety, protective clothing and gear is second in importance only to rider responsibility. Of course, wearing the proper protective gear is part of being a responsible motorcycle rider. Below you will learn a little bit about the importance of various pieces of clothing and gear.
The helmet is a very important piece of protective gear when it comes to your safety and well being as a motorcycle rider. There are many different types of helmet though the recommendation for maximum protection is to wear a full-face helmet. You may also elect to use a ¾ and ½ helmet though they do provide less protective benefit.
Gloves offer necessary protection for your hands. If you select gloves that are designed specifically for use with a motorcycle you will discover that they are designed to increase and improve grip on behalf of the rider. Some of these gloves also provide additional protection to the wrists. It is best, if you plan to do a lot of long distance driving that you purchase gloves designed for motorcycles rather than ordinary leather gloves. You also want to select gloves that are made of sturdy material in order to provide maximum protection.
Jackets. There is a reason that most motorcycle movies include a large group of men in leather jackets. They are a source of protection for the arms, torso, and back in the event of an accident. If you purchase a jacket that is designed specifically for motorcycles you will discover that they are often reinforced in the elbow, spine, and shoulders with special padding. Choosing a jacket that is bright in colour or white rather than the traditional black leather has been proven to make riders a little more noticeable to other drivers on the road.
Boots and pants are other great gear that provide much needed protection from the elements and in the event of a spill. Goggles and/or visors provide much needed protection for your eyes if you elect not to use a full-face helmet, and ear plugs can protect your ears from the sound of wind in your ears which can provide more damage than you may realize. Of course all the safety equipment and gear in the world is no substitute for safe and responsible driving.
