Vibration White Finger

When it comes to industrial injuries vibration white finger is one of the more common among those who handle equipment and machinery that vibrates. There has been legislation introduced for the purpose of limiting the exposure that employees experience to vibrating equipment. It is not understood that long-term exposure to equipment that vibrates only slightly can be just as damaging as short-term exposure to the equipment that has heavy vibrations.

Symptoms of Vibration White Finger

The symptoms of vibration white finger include fingers that turn white when exposed to the cold (thus the name of the injury), numbness, pain, and tingling in the fingers and hands. It is also believed that factors such as smoking and stress can exacerbate the problem making the symptoms more pronounced. At this point in time there is no cure for Vibration White Finger and the symptoms only worsen in time. Some of the more severe cases have resulted in the loss of fingers. The good news is that if you eliminate the behaviour that causes the symptoms they may disappear or diminish in time. On the other hand, if you continue exposing your hands to vibrating equipment you will discover that the symptoms may become permanent.

Treatments for Vibration White Finger

While surgery is an option in extreme cases of vibration white finger, it is an option that may be considered. If you smoke, the first recommendation for treating your symptoms is going to be to quit smoking. Other recommendations will be to cease using caffeine and other types of stimulants. Your doctor may prescribe medications or recommend over the counter treatments depending on the severity of your vibration white finger symptoms. Hand warming and exercises designed to strengthen the hand are also highly recommended as treatments for vibration white finger.
