What to do after a car accident
After a car accident it is recommended that you note down specific information to help determine who is at fault, and to build your case for a road accident compensation claim or an injury claim.
As well as exchanging general contact information, it is important to notify the police even if the accident is minor, for them to fill out a car accident report. This will be of importance if the other party's insurance details are not forthcoming at a later date.
Cuerdens Solicitors have experienced solicitors available to help in the aftermath of a car accident, and can file a car or road accident claim on your behalf, making the process simpler for you. Car Accident Checklist
- To avoid problems when your insurers become involved, do not discuss who was to blame for the accident, do not make any admissions.
- Exchange names, addresses, and telephone numbers (landlines and mobiles) with all parties involved, swap insurance company details and note down registration numbers.
- For each vehicle, note down the full name of the driver and the name of the registered owner of each vehicle. Take details of each driver's insurance company.
- Record a description of each vehicle, including year, make, model, colour and most importantly, damage sustained.
- Describe the exact location of the collision and how it happened - If you have a traditional camera, or phone camera, photos can prove useful. If you can, provide a small diagram for your insurers.
- Note the names, addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses.
- Inform the police. It is worth reporting every incident even if no-one is injured so that the police will have a car accident report on file. You may have problems with other drivers failing to supply insurance details later on, so should always involve the police. Normally the police will only attend road traffic accidents if there has been an injury.
- If you intend to claim expenses for documents such as medical reports, prescription charges and travel costs and expert advice, make sure you keep receipts.
