Whiplash Information

The most common cause of a whiplash injury is being hit from behind by a fast moving car or other vehicle.

The collision causes the victim's body to be pushed forward, whilst the head remains behind for an instant before rocking up and back causing neck muscles and ligaments to stretch and tear.

These damaged muscles then contract, violently jerking the head forward causing more stretching and tearing of muscles and ligaments.

For mild whiplash symptoms include aches and pains in the neck and back, stiffness and tenderness. There may be referred pain in the shoulders, pins and needles in the arms and legs and headaches. Symptoms normally appear days after the injury, but can sometimes be felt immediately.

In severe cases - which are rare, whiplash injuries can cause decreased range of motion, decreased tendon reflexes, weakness and insomnia. In the worst cases there can be neck fracture or dislocation, or injury to the spinal cord.

Thankfully, the effects of less severe whiplash are rarely permanent, and the majority of cases resolve themselves within six months.

Having said that, the symptoms of even minor whiplash can be debilitating and painful, making simple daily tasks difficult.
